Jacqueline in Sydney: “To get straight to the point: yes, I ate kangaroo.”
Hi everyone,
This is already my 6th and last blog of my adventure in Sydney. These five months went so fast. It feels like I arrived in Sydney only yesterday. Luckily, I have planned a nice 21 day tour to Cairns in my 6th month.
In today’s blog I will tell you a bit more about the food here in Australia. To get straight to the point: yes, I ate kangaroo. It’s the best meat I ever tasted. Concerning food, I’m not such a hero and I never want to try new things, but I’m happy that I tried this.
Back in the Netherlands, I have a thing for small potatoes but they don’t know that here unfortunately. What I did have were some nice wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce. Really recommendable!
And another thing I’d like to advise is to eat the cookies. Really all the people I met here and were not from Australia got addicted to these cookies. They’re called Tim Tam and even my Dutch boyfriend who came to visit me here took two packages with him. They’re SO good and you have them in different flavours. I’m thinking to also take a few packages with me back to the Netherlands.
There are also many public spaces where it’s allowed to barbeque and I’ve also done that many times. This is something you don’t really see in the Netherlands and it looks a bit weird but it’s so nice to do and a really cool idea.
I mostly cooked at home and in the beginning I found that difficult. They do have an Aldi (supermarket), but the food here is different than back home and especially regarding the prices. The healthy food is so much more expensive here. The first room mates were Korean and they cooked quite spicy and then the whole house would smell like that. In the second house were people from Belgium and Germany. Everyone there cooked quite similar as I always did.
During my time here I’ve also been out for dinner and often I ate pizza or hamburgers from Grill’d. The pizza crusts are very thin and that’s SO good.
To end my blog series and adventure, I would like to give you as tip that when you go out here and you cannot eat all the food: ask for a doggy bag. In Australia, this is the most normal thing to do and you also safe money.
I hope you enjoyed to read my blogs!
