This charitable institution serves pregnant, migrant women in distress and their Hong Kong-born children. Despite legal protections, these women are still too often fired unlawfully when pregnant and once fired, they become homeless and penniless. This company has already improved over 4200 Hong Kong lives (including babies) that have been at risk of abuse, neglect and/or trafficking.

Internship

Saving lives. That’s what you will be doing during an internship with this company. Cases typically involve employment, discrimination, immigration, asylum, family, criminal and child law as well as policy considerations. You support clients to understand their rights and help them defend legal claims.

Profile Student

You have interest in social justice and human rights law. It’s a plus when you’ve already worked in these fields. Furthermore, you show empathy and are analytical.

Daily tasks

You will work alongside Legal Case Managers.

  • Supporting clients to understand their rights and obligations as well as help them pursue/defend legal claims;
  • Attend meetings with lawyers, take minutes, follow-up, accompany clients to police and government departments (Immigration Department, Labour Department);
  • Research topical case and policy issues as they arise;
  • Research and prepare legal case histories and studies;
  • Research and prepare internal teaching paper about interventions including ‘Access to Information’ requests;
  • Where required, support work towards law and policy changes through community engagement and liaising with government, consulates, the legal community and other NGOs; and
  • Travel within Hong Kong is expected for the purposes of seeing clients, lawyers and to attend various meetings.

You are/have

  • Interested in social justice and human rights law. Previous experience in employment, criminal, family and immigration/asylum law will be an advantage;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English and/or Cantonese. Knowledge of Bahasa Indonesian and/or Tagalog is very useful;
  • Comfortable with operating within the company’s core values: non-judgmental, respectful, passionate, courageous, empathetic, discreet, collaborative.
