Example Monthly Costs for an Internship in Germany

To prepare well for your internship in Germany, it’s useful to know what monthly costs you might expect. The exact amounts can vary depending on the city and your lifestyle. Cities like Munich and Frankfurt tend to be more expensive than cities like Leipzig or Dresden.

  • Housing: $600 – $1,200
Costs depend on the city and the type of accommodation (shared apartment, student housing, or private studio). Berlin and Munich are among the more expensive cities, while smaller university towns are generally cheaper.
  • Living expenses (groceries, dining out): $250 – $500
Germany is known for its affordable groceries. Eating out regularly will increase your expenses, but many student-friendly restaurants offer good value.
  • Transportation (public transport, bike, etc.): $50 – $100
Most cities have excellent public transportation systems with student discounts. Monthly tickets for buses, trams, and subways are affordable. Biking is also popular and cost-effective.
  • Phone and internet: $30 – $60
Local SIM cards with data are available at reasonable prices. Internet is widely available and often included in rent for shared housing.
  • Insurance (health insurance, travel insurance): $50 – $100
Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. If you're not covered by a European health insurance card, you'll need to get a private or travel insurance policy.
  • Other expenses (gym, entertainment, personal expenses): $150 – $300
Includes fitness memberships, cultural activities, outings, and personal purchases. Germany offers many low-cost or free leisure activities, especially for students.

Total indicative monthly costs: $1,130 – $2,260
