Jacqueline in Sydney: “The boss’s dog always comes to greet me.”

A normal internship day?

At 7 o’clock in the morning, it’s time to get up again. Strangely enough, after almost 3 months, I’m still always awake before my alarm. At home, this never happened, and at first I thought it was because of the weather, but now it’s colder here, and with this temperature at home, I usually still sleep. It definitely can’t be the jet lag anymore — having jet lag for 3 months would be very strange. But oh well, nothing to do about it, and luckily I’m not tired when I get up.

Then I get ready—the usual things, like in the Netherlands—and at quarter to 8 I leave for my internship. It’s only a 10-minute walk from my house to the company, really super convenient.

When I arrive at the internship, I’m always alone with David and Stella for the first half hour. Stella is the boss’s dog and she always comes to greet me. So you immediately feel welcome. During this half hour, I often check my work email. Sometimes I already have a task by then, and if not, I go to David and ask for an assignment. The rest of the day goes on like this. I do the tasks I’m given and I also ask for tasks myself when I have nothing to do. During my internship, I work on various assignments. They are mostly small tasks that all interns do. Unfortunately, most tasks are not related to my study, only a few are. I mainly do research, social media, copying, make PowerPoint presentations, tidying up, Photoshop work, and photography and web design tasks. These tasks are often short and easy to do. There’s not always something to do at the company, so I always bring my own laptop so I can work on school stuff if I have nothing for the company.

Around 1 o’clock, I usually take a break with the other interns, sometimes an hour, sometimes half an hour. It varies a bit. The company allows us to take a one-hour
