Dewi in New York: “I actually really enjoyed the cliché ‘intern tasks’.”

I truly think New York is the most amazing city on earth. It’s divided into five boroughs, each with its own character. I lived right in the middle of Manhattan in the Webster Apartments, which I definitely recommend because on my first day I already met 30 Dutch girls there. New York is very diverse, and I didn’t sit still for a single moment. In your free time, you can go shopping in SOHO and on 5th Avenue, hop between rooftops, stroll through Central Park, see a Broadway show, walk along the Highline towards Chelsea and Greenwich, party in the coolest and most exclusive clubs, and soak up culture in Brooklyn.

An amazing experience

I really enjoyed my internship. The best part was working at the Coterie Tradeshow, where I helped sell our brand’s clothing to international buyers. I also got to assist a few times at photoshoots, my opinion was listened to carefully, and with Manhattan in the background, it was a wonderful experience. Of course, I sometimes had to do real intern tasks, like picking up and dropping off samples. However, I actually really enjoyed this because it gave me the chance to explore the city further during work hours.

Top Three Moments

I didn’t sit still for a single moment in New York, and honestly, every day was special. If I really have to choose, my top three are: the Yankees baseball game where they won and at the end “New York, New York” by Frank Sinatra was played; seeing the Broadway show Phantom of the Opera; and when Afrojack DJed at club Marquee.

My Tips for Students

For women, I absolutely recommend living in the Webster Apartments — sorry, no boys allowed… You’ll quickly build a great network there and don’t have to worry about cooking or cleaning, which is ideal! Also, if you like going out, I recommend connecting with promoters. With them, you can dine and party for free at the most high-end restaurants and clubs. Furthermore, I advise going to a baseball and/or basketball game and seeing a Broadway show — truly unique! Finally, if you’re staying for a longer time, take a weekend trip to Washington and to Boston/Cambridge.

Experience

A 10 out of 10!!! I had the time of my life in New York, and it was worth every cent — no one can ever take such an experience away from you.
