Visa for your internship in the US
During your internship in the US, you will need a J-1 visa. This visa is specifically designed for exchange programs, such as internships and study-related work experiences, and allows you to temporarily stay in the US for a learning or work opportunity. It’s like a “growth opportunity” ticket for your career! 🚀
Why you need a J-1 visa:
- Legal work status: Without a J-1 visa, you cannot do an internship in the US. It is a requirement for obtaining work permits as an international student.
- Cultural exchange program: The visa emphasizes educational and cultural exchange between countries. You’ll not only gain professional skills but also learn about American culture!
- Temporary status: The J-1 visa is intended for temporary stays, ideal for your internship period, while keeping you in a status specifically for international students.
How to apply for a J-1 visa:
- Find a sponsor organization: Abroad Internships partners with a reliable sponsor in Europe, which allows us to assist you thoroughly in your visa application process.
- DS-2019 Form: Once your sponsor has approved you, you will receive a DS-2019 form. This is your “Certificate of Eligibility for Exchange Visitor Status.” You’ll need this form to apply for your visa.
- Pay the SEVIS fee: SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) is the system that tracks your records. You must pay the SEVIS fee before applying for your visa.
- Visa application at the U.S. Embassy: You can now apply for your visa at the U.S. Embassy in your country. This involves filling out the DS-160 form and scheduling an interview.
- Interview and documents: During the interview, you’ll need to bring documents such as your DS-2019 form, passport, proof of financial means, and your internship offer.
If all goes well, you’ll receive your J-1 visa and be ready to start your adventure in the U.S.!
