Example Monthly Costs for an Internship in Switzerland

Switzerland is a prestigious and well-organized destination for internships, especially in finance, hospitality, international relations, and engineering. However, it is also one of the most expensive countries in Europe. Careful budgeting is key to making the most of your experience.

  • 🏠 Housing: €800 – €1,400
Rent is high, especially in cities like Zurich, Geneva, and Basel. Most interns choose shared apartments or student residences to reduce costs.
  • 🍽️ Living expenses (groceries, dining out): €300 – €500
Groceries are pricey, and eating out even more so. Cooking at home will help keep your costs down. Dining at restaurants is typically reserved for special occasions.
  • 🚆 Transportation (public transport, train, etc.): €70 – €120
Switzerland has excellent public transportation. Monthly travel passes are available and offer good value, especially for regular commuting.
  • 📱 Phone and internet: €30 – €50
Prepaid SIM cards or subscriptions with data are common. Internet is often included in rent, or can be set up separately.
  • 🛡️ Insurance (health insurance, travel insurance): €60 – €100
Health insurance is mandatory in Switzerland. If you're staying for a short internship, international health or travel insurance is usually sufficient — but be sure to check requirements.
  • 🎉 Other expenses (gym, activities, personal spending): €150 – €300
Covers leisure, fitness, weekend trips, or entertainment. While costs are high, Switzerland offers incredible nature and free outdoor activities like hiking and swimming in lakes.

💰 Total estimated monthly cost:

€1,410 – €2,470
