Example Monthly Costs for an Internship in Sweden

Sweden is known for its high quality of life, strong work culture, and innovation-driven economy. While it’s one of the more expensive countries in Europe, many cities offer a welcoming environment for international interns — especially in industries like tech, design, sustainability, and business.

  • 🏠 Housing: €500 – €1,000
Accommodation costs depend on the city (Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö being the most expensive) and whether you’re in a student residence, shared flat, or private apartment.
  • 🍽️ Living expenses (groceries, dining out): €250 – €450
Groceries are moderately priced. Eating out is relatively expensive, so most interns cook at home or eat in student cafés where meals are subsidized.
  • 🚍 Transportation (metro, bus, etc.): €50 – €90
Public transport is reliable and widely used. Monthly student transport passes are available and reduce costs significantly.
  • 📱 Phone and internet: €20 – €40
Affordable mobile plans with data are widely available. Internet is usually included in your rent or can be set up easily.
  • 🛡️ Insurance (health insurance, travel insurance): €30 – €80
EU citizens can use their EHIC card. Non-EU interns are advised to take out private insurance to cover healthcare costs during their stay.
  • 🎟️ Other expenses (fitness, leisure, outings): €100 – €250
This includes gym memberships, activities, travel, and entertainment. Sweden offers lots of nature and free outdoor activities, which helps reduce costs.

💰 Total estimated monthly cost:

€950 – €1.910
