Example Monthly Costs for an Internship in Portugal
Portugal is one of the more affordable Western European countries, offering a great quality of life with relatively low living costs. However, expenses may vary depending on your city of residence (e.g., Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra) and lifestyle. Here's an indicative monthly budget to help you prepare:
- Housing: €300 – €800
Accommodation prices vary by city and housing type (shared apartment, student residence, or private studio). Lisbon and Porto are typically more expensive, while cities like Coimbra or Braga offer more budget-friendly options. - Living expenses (groceries, dining out): €200 – €400
Groceries are reasonably priced, and eating out is quite affordable compared to many other European countries. You’ll find good value in local cafés, bakeries, and traditional restaurants. - Transportation (public transport, bike, etc.): €30 – €60
Public transport is efficient and affordable. A monthly pass for buses, trams, and metro systems in Lisbon or Porto usually falls within this range. In smaller cities, walking or biking is often sufficient.
- Phone and internet: €15 – €30
Mobile data plans are very affordable in Portugal. Internet is often included in your rent or can be set up easily with local providers. - Insurance (health insurance, travel insurance): €30 – €70
Travel and health insurance are recommended during your internship, especially for non-EU residents. EU students can use their EHIC card for basic medical services. - Other expenses (gym, trips, entertainment): €80 – €200
This includes costs for going out, visiting nearby towns, cultural activities, and personal shopping.
Total estimated monthly cost: €655 – €1,560
